Vine: Express Your Ideas in Six Seconds

When Instagram burst onto the scene, people suddenly had a go-to app they can use to share photo updates. 2013’s word of the year “selfie” also owes a lot to Instagram given that users of the platform mostly uploaded photos of themselves to keep their followers updated about their lives.

Enter January 24, 2013. The day that Instagram saw competition from Vine, an app launched with the sole purpose of sharing videos. Although it just provided a six-second window for ideas to be captured, people were fast to show how creative they can be with just six seconds to record their moments.

The use of Vine not only caught on with mobile users, but the business world embraced it as well. Companies used it to give teasers about their products, introduce their audience to what goes on behind the office, and much more. Even sports teams such as those in the National Basketball Association took advantage of the platform by highlighting player introductions or impressive plays.

What You Can Do With Vine

Of course, the main purpose of having Vine on your mobile device is to tape six-second videos. Now, when Vine was first released, users needed to time their videos perfectly so they’d hit exactly six seconds. Meaning, you had to shoot your video without making a mistake.

However, Vine has come a long way from that and now provides a range of features that users will really enjoy. That being said, here are some of the nice features Vine has to offer:

  • Sessions

This allows you to main multiple drafts that you are editing. It also enables you to switch from one project to the other.

  • Time Travel

Basically, this provides an answer to the problem Vine had with recording videos. Instead of rehearsing what you’re going to put into a video, Time Travel allows you to remove, reorganize, or replace any shot.

  • Camera Tools

New tools were added for the camera like a grid so it’s easier for creators to frame their shots. “Ghost tools” were also provided that allows users to view their previous shot.

  • Channels

Vine currently offers 15 different channels of different categories so it’s easy for you to get your videos noticed. You can submit your posts to channels such as Comedy, Music, and Nature.

Not only that, you can also use channels to find other Viners who share your interest as each channel features a feed of posts submitted to the said channel.

  • On The Rise

This is where you can find users who are gaining popularity on Vine.

  • Revine

Just like the retweet button on Twitter, revining allows you to repost a Vine uploaded by another user.

  • Protected Posts

When Vine first launched, it didn’t offer much privacy because once a Vine was shared, it was visible to the public. This time, Vine allows you to change the settings of your content so only your followers can see what you upload.

  • Comment

Of course, a network operating on the idea of social sharing wouldn’t be complete without the comments feature.

Vine History

Vine was founded by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll in June 2012. The company they started was acquired by Twitter in October 2012. The app was officially launched on January 24, 2013 for the iOS platform on both iPhone and iPod Touch. On June 2, 2013, the app was made available on Android devices.

Although many people were skeptical about the six-second video length, the initial user base proved them all wrong. And that statement remains true to this day and 40 million users later. In fact, Vine became the most downloaded free app on the iOS App Store on April 9, 2013.
