About The Impact Social Media Education Project

The Impact Social Media Education Project was founded in October of 2013 by Mark and Jennifer Guertin. The purpose of this project is to benefit and propel college students. This project provides students with the ability to create a fully functioning website and to have access to a cPanel interface with all the bells and whistles. This service is provided to the students at no cost to them.

We became aware of the need for such an offering as this while I was studying at Kaplan University. During the course of my studies and on numerous occasions, various classes required the students to complete different projects that were to be displayed on the World Wide Web.

What we quickly realized was that there was not a readily available and excellent option to meet this need. Free web hosting is typically problematic in that it gives very limited functionality and incorporates unwanted advertisements.

To be frank, many students were plagued by this dilemma and a great deal of discussion ensued amongst the students and Professors. At this time I decided two things; firstly that I would immediately provide a free hosting account to any of my fellow students who were in need and secondly, that in the future I would create an education project for this very cause.

Now, here we are and it is time to officially launch the Impact Social Media Education Project! In order to maximize the learning of students they need access to a fully functional web server interface that is complete with every bell and whistle. This project will provide that for them free of charge. The only requirement is that they must be verified as a college student.

Each student that desires to participate will be issued a User ID and Password for their own cPanel login at their own unique subdomain. An example would be http://jane-doe.edu.impactsocialmedia.net/ Also, there is a web page here called the Student Site page and on this page we will list the name of each student, their university, their major and a link to their website.

If the students so desire, they can continue to maintain their website after they graduate. This will serve the purpose for them to display a resume or to give examples of their work. This will aid them in their job seeking endeavors. If the student prefers the site can be deleted at any time by their request.

The following list is what is included for each student:

  • Subdomain name
  • 250MB-1000MB of disk space
  • 500MB-2000MB of bandwidth
  • Up to 2 FTP accounts
  • Up to 5 email accounts
  • Up to 2 email lists
  • Up to 5 databases
  • Up to 2 subdomains
  • Up to 2 parked domains
  • Up to 2 addon domains
  • Fully loaded cPanel interface
  • Online help video tutorials
  • Access to 4,500 free website templates
  • Access to Fantastico Deluxe
  • Access to Quick Install

This platform will allow the students to study, experiment and learn just about anything imaginable. This is the same platform that would be used to host any full blown web presence whether it be HTML, C#, Visual Basic, PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails, an application, mobile site, etc., etc.

We will be adding educational blogs to the front page of this site for the benefit of the students. We will also be adding helpful links on the link page which could be of benefit to their studies. Additionally, we will be having contests whereby the students can vote on the different sites to see which is most popular. Lastly, the front page blog of this site will allow students to socially network with each other which will allow them to share knowledge, ideas and suggestions.

We sincerely hope that this project will be of great benefit to your learning and career path. We encourage you to provide us with your helpful feedback and comments. In closing I would like to leave you with this quote from President John F. Kennedy, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.”

         Sincerely, Mark and Jennifer Guertin
